O Spirit of Jesus, we need Thee. Every morning, noon, and night we need Thee. To change this world out of its wretchedness into Thy gladness we need Thee. Oh, come with Thy great power. It was to the great hearts, t0 the world-minded, that Thou didst promise Thy presence; “Go ye into all the world,” Thou didst say, “and lo, I am with you always.” Save us from ourselves, from our narrow nationalism, from mere sectarianism; save us for Thy kingdom. Save us for the world-wide brotherhood. Save us for Thyself. Save us to be stewards of Thy grace.
-Ralph Cushman, Pocket Prayer Book, 1941
I am so afraid to open my clenched fists!
Who will I be when I have nothing left to hold on to?
Who will I be when I stand before you with empty hands?
Please help me to gradually open my hands
and to discover that I am not what I own,
but what you want to give me.
-Henri Nouwen, The Only Necessary Thing: Living a Prayerful Life
The world is a tempest, raging,
tossing the nations about,
like a ship adrift, far from shore.
In your power, calm the waters,
and hear the call of your people.
Transform the world with your goodness,
and heal the world with your steadfast love.
Let all the rocks cry out, for you are King.
There is no other.
-Thom Turner at Everyday Liturgy
‘Teach me to do your will,
for you are my GOD.
Let your good Spirit
lead me to level ground.”
O God our disturber,
whose speech is pregnant with power
and whose word will be fulfilled:
may we know ourselves unsatisfied
with all that distorts your truth,
and make our hearts attentive
to your liberating voice,
In Jesus Christ, Amen.
